This included 3.875 yds (end of bolt) of a dark red suiting fabric, 5 yds of a 5/8″ wine/gold trim, 5 yds of a 5/8″ black/gold trim, six holiday ribbon spools of differing varieties, several packs of La Mode buttons, and a pattern. I didn’t actually even complete a solid concept before beginning to acquire materials, and thusly returned from my early morning venture to Jo-Anns with just under $50 of supplies. The top left fanwork is by janylate on Tumblr, the historical costumes were sourced from Pinterest, and the costume photos from various Phantom cast members’ Instagrams. This was my final inspiration board for this project. I knew I wanted to base my design of this costume primarily around Maria Björnson‘s original rendering for Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, as well as the current Broadway editions, similarly inspired historical pieces, and my favorite fan-created artworks. I had a little over two months to conceptualize and complete this costume for this event, and I began with a little four a.m. In November of 2016 I initially decided to work on debuting this costume for Ichibancon 2017, which is an anime/comic convention of fairly high standards held annually in the early weeks of January. Although a big look for me, and the one I am most well-known for on social media, I was not and still am not happy with the final product at the time I created it, and it now lays in a pile of scraps, waiting to be redone. The Mask of Red Death (Masquerade / Why So Silent?) costume variation worn by Erik, the title character of the classic Broadway musical, Phantom of the Opera, is the most elaborate and gaudy costume I have made to date. I suppose when one must begin a journey, it is best to do so in the most extravagant of ways.
